FAQ
Where can we park?
Street parking might be available, or you can park in the GRCC parking ramp across the street. If you need more accessible parking, please email rainbowroomgr@gmail.com.
Is the space accessible?
We have a ramp at our entrance. There’s a lift and an elevator, and all areas open during Queer Prom are accessible. We offer accessible restrooms and gender inclusive restrooms.
What if I want to attend, but I cannot afford a ticket?
We have a limited number of financial hardship tickets available. Or consider volunteering your time, as volunteers get a free ticket. Please email rainbowroomgr@gmail.com.
What’s up with the Prom Court?
We found the traditional Prom King/Prom Queen labels inadequate, so we added Prom Monarch and Prom Goblin. There will be crowns and prizes and a Prom Court Crowning Ceremony.
Who can compete?
Anyone. The only rules are that you must nominate yourself, and you can choose only one category. All categories are open to creative interpretation. Feel free to encourage your friends to come vote for you. Here’s a link to the nomination form: https://forms.gle/EAgEo44fWAhstGTV6. If you have questions, please email rainbowroomgr@gmail.com.
Is this event at an actual church?
Yes! Not just any church. Fountain Street Church, which is one of the oldest churches in Grand Rapids.
Are you accepting vendor applications?
Yes! We prefer local queer artists / makers. Please send an email to rainbowroomgr@gmail.com.
Do you need volunteers?
Yes! Volunteers get a free ticket. Please email rainbowroomgr@gmail.com.
Does the minister know you’re going to have drag performances in the sanctuary?
It was his idea! Here’s what he says about the church:
Fountain Street Church is entirely, unapologetically LGBTQ affirming at every level. Our current and former senior ministers are queer people, the church hosts multiple yearly pride events and has celebrated same-sex and same-gender weddings for over twenty years. We are currently an annual organizational sponsor of the GRPride Center. The first fully affirming sermon preached on record was in 1984, the church became missionally and publicly affirming in 1987, Fountain Street Church organized the public campaign to launch Gay Pride in our city in ’86/87/88.
His name is Rev. Nathan Dannison. Here’s a link to the first of his series of sermons on queer heroes of the Bible, “Ruth and Naomi: Liberation and Intentional Family” https://youtu.be/gNh6w-JD2OU?si=EdnWtj4ukC6e69kx
